Safe staffing (aged care)

Aged care members across Aotearoa New Zealand want to see the Government implement minimum mandatory staffing levels in aged care hospitals and rest homes in 2022.

#safestaffingnow is a joint campaign by E tū, the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO), and Grey Power.

Current staffing levels are based on voluntary guidelines only, which were drawn up in 2005.

Not only are these recommendations now completely out of date, but there are no requirements for rest homes to have mandatory numbers of staff on any shift.

In 2020, E tū, NZNO, and Grey Power launched an open letter to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, calling for the guidelines to be updated and made mandatory.

We presented the open letter and parliamentary petition to Health Select Committee chairperson and Labour MP, Liz Craig, on 9 December 2021.
